My boys spent the greater part of the late afternoon today gathering cicada shells off the trees in the yard. We have four big silver maple trees and they have been just covered in those skins for the past few weeks. In fact, we went and got a book from the library last week to read so we could learn about why cicadas shed their skins. (Actually, it's quite interesting. If you see them, you should ask the boys about it sometime.)
Anyway, this afternoon was really fun, both in terms of appreciating nature and appreciating how God makes children different. Wish I had caught it on video. My always cautious 7yo first child spent the whole time carefully plucking the little shells off the trees and tenderly filling his bug habitat with them. My always adventurous almost-3yo, on the other hand, spent the first half of the time knocking them off the trees with a big stick, and then crushing ("crunching" as he said) them hard with his foot. The second half of the time, he had figured out how to carefully pluck them off the trees . . . and then crush them!
That's my two boys in a nutshell (or cicada shell)!

How are things going? I'm so excited to begin a new "year" of learning, although every day we learn something new! Today we had a kindergarten-readiness assessment with Olivia, the woman asked her about rhyming words, letter recognition and sounds...she's totally ready. We're eager to go. She wants to follow her big sister in learning!
Hi Erin!!
I love this post! I still wonder hiow 2 siblings can be so very different! Night & day. This is how my sister & I always have been.
I believe it shows God's true individual love for each & every person. He has painstakingly made each person unique! Amazing!!
Can't wait to meet you all this weekend! I hope to remember to ask the boys about the cicaida shells!!

Hi Erin! Love the Blog - it's amazing what joy we can share with one another on a blog!
We had no damage in the windstorm that swept through Ohio on Sunday, but we've had no power too. Going on day 5 ...
On the up side, God willing I am to be ordained a deacon on Oct. 11, 13 years and four days since our crismation. I'm so humbled by the thought.
Our seven year old is starting second grade. He's trying to decide between being a professional soccer player and a ninja archeologist at Princeton (where Indiana Jones works!). Rather than homeschool, we found a very small public school system outside of Dayton. Daughter is a Senior in high school. The whole system has less than 2500 kids. Kind of the next best thing.
Anyway, love the blog - check mine out if you get the time. I'm not as diligent as I should be, but our priest has realized the value of blogging - frted.wordpress.com. Mine is thecurmudgeonscorner.blogspot.com
TTFN!
In Christ our savior,
Marty
